National Apprentice Week (NAW) was established by the U.S. Department of Labor in 2015 to showcase the value of Registered Apprenticeship in building a highly skilled workforce. We can’t think of a better testament to this purpose than the story of former M3 HVAC Apprentice and current M3 HVAC Project Engineer, Michael Frohrib.

In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week 2024, we dove deep into Michael’s career journey from Apprentice to Project Engineer.

The Story of M3 HVAC Apprentice-Turned-Project Engineer, Michael Frohrib

Background

Michael hasn’t always been in HVAC— prior to coming to the trades, Michael was an Army civilian for the U.S. Army. After several friends tried talking Michael into becoming an apprentice, he finally decided to see what apprenticeship was all about. He left his government job to join the Air Conditioning Trade Association (ACTA) and was hired as an M3 apprentice in 2015.

How apprenticeship advanced Michael’s career

As an M3 apprentice, Michael was connected with several mentors and peers who encouraged and supported him throughout his 4-year apprenticeship. He had the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects and receive feedback along the way.

The M3 apprenticeship advanced my career greatly. It was the foundation of my education in the HVAC industry. It provided me with hands-on experience and the opportunity to develop practical skills in the field. Working alongside experienced tradesmen enhanced my understanding of industry standards and best practices. Overall, the apprenticeship [was a] crucial step in my journey toward achieving my career goals,” Michael shared.

Projects/skills developed as an apprentice

Some projects Michael got to work on as an apprentice included:Michael Frohrib: National Apprenticeship Week

“[The projects I worked on as an apprentice helped me] develop several key skills. First, I honed my project management abilities. I learned how to effectively coordinate tasks and timelines to ensure projects were completed on schedule. Additionally, I gained a solid understanding of construction techniques and safety protocols, which has enhanced my ability to contribute on-site effectively [in my various roles beyond the apprenticeship]. I also improved my communication skills, working closely with team members, subcontractors, and clients to ensure everyone was aligned and informed throughout the project lifecycle. Finally, I developed problem-solving skills by navigating unexpected challenges that arose on-site, which helped me to think quickly and adapt as needed.”

Overall, Michael expressed that his experience as an apprentice significantly broadened his skillset and prepared him for future challenges in the industry.

Professional growth

Beyond his 4-year apprenticeship, Michael graduated to become an HVAC Journeyman in 2019. Since then, he’s been promoted through multiple roles including foreman, estimator, and now project engineer.

“Professionally, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of HVAC systems, troubleshooting techniques, and installation processes. I’ve learned to read plans and schematics, which has enhanced my technical skills. Moreover, hands-on experience in various job settings has improved my problem-solving abilities and adaptability when faced with unexpected challenges.”

“Personally, I’ve developed a greater sense of responsibility and confidence in my abilities. Working with mentors and teammates has taught me the importance of communication and collaboration, allowing me to build strong relationships with colleagues and customers and further develop my leadership capabilities,” Michael shared.

While the apprenticeship was designed to equip him with valuable skills, Michael’s mentors saw that he also developed a tenacious mindset and desire to continuously learn and improve.

Michael’s current role as HVAC Project Engineer

Michael is currently one of M3 MEP’s mechanical project engineers (or mechanical PE). As a mechanical PE, his role involves overseeing major aspects of projects, including document control, organizing the acquisition of materials, equipment, and labor, planning for costs, and directly supporting the project manager with various tasks. Michael also assists in managing project timelines and budgets, ensuring that all tasks within a project are completed efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

“To contribute to the team’s success, I focus on effective communication and teamwork. I share insights from my technical experience as a foreman and train junior team members, helping them develop their skills. I also proactively identify potential issues and propose solutions that help keep our projects on track and within budget. Collaboration produces a positive work environment and enhances our overall project outcomes.”
