We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to the Mark III family and executive team, Arturo (Art) Martinez, Chief Talent Officer (CTO). As CTO, Art will lead our talent development department to ensure we offer best-in-class training programs, medical benefits, career development, and compensation packages for wages and retirement. To put it simply, Art’s mission is to ensure our employees all agree that this is the best job they’ve ever had!
We are challenging traditional construction methodologies and embracing a manufacturing mentality as we work towards our company’s vision. Our value proposition to owners is that we can deliver medium and large-scale medical facilities better, faster, and cheaper by moving construction off-site to our manufacturing facility where we are building full-scale modular construction units and MSK’s (manufactured standardized kits). Over the next five years, Mark III will have reduced the build time of medical projects by 25% and decreased the overall cost of construction by 20%.
In order to meet these goals, we need a best-in-class team and that’s where Art comes in! As Chief Talent Officer, Art will lead our talent development department, foster our culture, and ensure that Mark III remains a best place to work.

Are you an early bird or night owl?
Naturally, I am more of a night owl. I seem to get a second wind towards the end of the day and I enjoy working into the evenings. I tend to be more of an evening person more so than a night owl and can be more productive later in the day when it is typically quieter.
Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?
Two names come to mind when I think of those who have had the biggest influence on my career, Robert Jones, GE’s VP of Human Resources (at the time I was there), and Amy Wood, Woodward’s VP of Human Resources.
Robert was not only a boss but also a mentor. He was instrumental to my career at GE. He was the type of person who cared about me professionally and as a person. I would describe our working relationship as more of a partnership collaboration, but at the same time he was my boss but he always treated me like a partner. He taught me how to deliver and receive critical feedback, which is necessary for growth and improvement. While his feedback was direct, it was also encouraging and positive. I learned so much from Robert during our time working together at General Electric.
Amy, my most recent boss, had a similar leadership style. She gave me opportunities to grow and learn while also providing the coaching and feedback I needed to be successful. At the end of the day, Amy cared about my well-being, growth, and success in addition to my performance in my role.
They both taught me to value the relationship with my peers and never treat any interaction as a transaction. I take this same approach when I am managing and leading. I am that way by nature, but it was reinforced by seeing and following their example.
What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?
I would like to think about its reliability and my ability to connect with people. I want to understand where people come from and what drives them. In my own personal experience, I have been able to run the gambit and I feel really lucky to have been able to have some professional success.
What led you to a career in human resources?
During Junior High, the military seemed interesting to me. I thought it could be a career and something I could be interested in. The military guided me in so many ways; prior to that, I didn’t have direction. I grew up on the wrong side of the railroad tracks. One of the best things that happened to me was having the opportunity to leave. My roots are a part of me and because of that, I was able to build a life and career I am proud of. I know my background served me well, this was evident in my military background.
My first job was to be a leader. I was an officer in the navy. I remember very quickly being able to relate to my subordinates/direct reports/recruits, I saw myself in them so clearly and it was a huge motivator to help them find their path and purpose.

What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit of?
I would like to continue to keep physical fitness a part of my daily life. It has always been there in some shape or form, but I would like to integrate it more into my daily life. It needs to be a frequent habit to have a positive impact. My favorite form of exercise is cycling and I am very excited about using Mark III’s private on-site gym.

If you could only have three apps on your smartphone, which would you pick?
Google Maps, News App (WSJ, USA Today, Washington Post, New York Times), Map My Fitness (so I can track how many miles I cycle or run).
I’m old school and use an iPod Nano to listen to music while I cycle.
What’s your favorite sport to watch and which team do you root for?
I’m a Dodger and Laker fan and always root for my college Navy and Michigan football teams.
What’s the top destination on your must-visit list?
One of my favorite places to visit is Lake Tahoe. It’s beautiful up there and I enjoy skiing and the mountains. You can spend a great day on the slopes getting exercise in nature and then hit the casino in the evenings. I am very excited to be only a few hours from Tahoe! I also enjoy the beach in the summertime. Some of my favorite coastal climates to visit include Mexico, Hawaii, and the Carolina’s.
